THE BEAUFORT'S MAKEOVER
First some before pictures for a later comparison, from Beaufort's bridge...
From the foot bridge, each side of the island. I'm told much of this island will disappear in time.....
.............. This flat water will begin to meander and "washout" below log devices creating cover..........
Now lets get started.............This is how it's done.....
...........Denny drags over some logs after digging trenches...........
20 to 30 foot hemlock logs are placed in locations designed by the Pennsylvania Fish And Boat Commission..............
Lin Gamble's turn to operate the gas powered drill, he drills ten holes five in each log in preperation for pinning into stream bed.......
Four foot steel rods are pounded through the drilled holes and into the stream bed for solid anchor. Notice the logs slope down, into the stream and point upstream.................
Six inches of the 5/8" steel rod is bent over and sledged tight to the top of the log.
Limestone ,R-5 size cover the log to top of trench. Dirt is then placed with grass seed and straw.
This all begins with a willing and gracious landowner. Walter "Buzzy" Crusan, he even donated the use of his backhoe to this project ... Can't thank you enough Buzz !
Denny Garland, a long time member, donates his skill operating Buzzy's hoe. Thank you Denny !
Ben Wright, with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, had many people and a machine with his crew.
........................Here are some after construction photos............
.................These previous three photos are just below the foot bridge...........
R-5 rock veins to protect bank from erosion and shift stream's channel back to it's rightful place..... More photos after heavy stream flow goes to work over these devices.
